I’ve been looking at old pictures a lot lately and regretting that I didn’t start blogging earlier. It’s been such a great way to record everything that goes on in our lives. So I’ve decided to do some “retro” posts of things that have happened in the past. I’ll still be blogging about current family events as well of course.

On June 18th, 2006 Travis and I eloped and got married! We had originally been planning a traditional wedding in Marathon but as these things have a way of doing it was inflating beyond what we were prepared to pay for. Not to mention the stress of it all. Travis was relieved when I asked him if he would consider eloping. He certainly wasn’t going to suggest it but once I did it was a huge weight off of our shoulders. We got married in a little chapel in London Ontario, Las Vegas style, the place actually had a drive through for people who couldn’t be bothered to get out of their cars to get married! We of course went inside and had a nice little civil ceremony just the two of us with witnesses provided by the chapel. Years later now, I think this was the perfect way for us to get married, I’m so glad that we did.
The next day we flew out to our honeymoon at Secrets Capri Riviera in Mexico! We had decided that if we were going to elope, we would have the cheap frugal wedding we wanted and use our wedding money to go on the most amazing honeymoon we could afford! Spoiler alert, the following is a pile of vacation photos, so if that’s not your thing you might want to skip this part ;)

This is my favourite picture of Travis from our honeymoon. They had archery targets set up that you could try out. I didn’t try it myself but Travis actually managed to hit the target. Not bad!
This trampoline was super fun! You got attached to these two bungees and it rocketed you higher than you would bounce on your own and then you could do flips and tricks. The main problem being that when you’ve been drinking all day, flipping upside down makes it go to your head awfully fast!
The games area of the resort had some crazy statues. They were very colourful and definitely different.
We spotted this cute little gecko at the pool bar one evening. He was teeny tiny and very fast. The resort was full of wildlife, there were turtles in a pond inside the games area, geckos, iguanas, and every day they had a different type of animal around the pool that you could pose with. I had my picture taken with the cutest little monkey one of the days. He was so sweet!
We did a couple excursions while we were there. One was a three activity combo day. We first went to a zip line in the jungle which was scary but lots of fun!
Second on the agenda was snorkelling. What we were not told was that it was snorkelling in underground caves. Pitch black caves. Caves where part of the horror movie The Cave was filmed. Snorkelling is out of my comfort zone as it is, but this sent me into a full blown panic attack. Travis thought it was really cool though and didn’t seem to understand why I didn’t want to look down at the very deep water we were swimming through. I stuck close to the guide, who was the only one with a flashlight and was the first one out of the water. I’ll never forget it!
Third on the docket was the ruins of Tulum. Tulum was amazing, so beautiful! Our guide was pretty hilarious as well. It’s hard to see, but if you look at the carving above the doorway in the first picture, it’s a carving of a woman giving birth. That’s at the top of the temple there! The guide told us that Mayan women in Tulum would often give birth by themselves, tying a rope over a tree branch and wrapping it around their belly so that they could push their belly with each contraction and deliver sooner. He seemed really fixated on that, maybe because of the horrified reactions he got ;)
Tulum had a major iguana infestation going on. They were literally everywhere! And some of them were gigantic, easily 5ft long or more.
A la carte restaurants were high on my list of requirements for a resort. I’m just not a buffet fan. This resort had 5 a la carte restaurants, and this gentleman was our server at the Italian restaurant. He would come by with fresh bread, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a giant wheel of parmesan cheese. He would then carve out fresh parmesan to go with the bread. It was awesome, and this picture still makes me laugh.
The lunch place was amazing here. As soon as you sat down they brought you fresh tortilla chips and this amazing fresh salsa and guacamole. That salsa was the inspiration for the salsa I make today with fresh farmers market veggies, but somehow it’s not quite the same.
We did our second excursion as a trip to Playa Del Carmen for some shopping and to see what the city was like. It ended up being fun and terrifying. There were people in dark alleys calling us in to go buy drugs (of course we didn’t!) and crazy bars and restaurants. We bought some souvenirs while we were there and called the cab to come get us. On our way back, the cab just pulled over in the middle of nowhere. We had no idea what was going to happen, but luckily the cabbie just needed to stop for some reason and eventually got us home safe and sound.
We had beautiful weather the whole time we were there. On our last day though, it did rain torrentially but only for a few minutes. This beautiful rainbow is the last picture we took on our honeymoon.
